The Great Mystery, volume 3 Fox writes, "The spirit
was not in the scriptures, but was in them that gave them forth.
And the spirit which gave forth the scriptures, and which was in
the saints opens the scripture again, and leads into all truth."
In other words, when we Obey God, He delineates the true meaning of
Biblical assertions. Our understanding, therefore, increases
in our loyalty to Jesus' admonitions. Yes, we need God's help in
interpreting His words. . . Fox's example, Jesus blesses
"the poor in spirit." He is reminding us of our natural
emptiness and spiritual poverty. Small
wonder early Friends recognized that Jesus afforded them the
spiritual power to respond to the witness of God in our souls.
We are a poor people in need of the Lord who gives us an inward
anointing thru which we can discern His written words.
May we read scripture in that Spirit.
